Expect the Unexpected by Linda

"In life, people always tell you to expect the unexpected, but you rarely ever do. Chris and I never expected to find ourselves in a situation like this, but it just goes to prove that you have to expect the unexpected."

Christopher Lorenzo sat at his desk after just finishing up a huge case. He looked over at his exhausted partner and best friend, Rita Lee Lance. She'd been so tired the last few weeks, and this case hadn't given her much time for sleep. He was glad that the case was finally over, so she could get some rest.

Rita looked up after finishing a quick phone call to the A.D.A., George Donovan, and saw her partner staring at her. She knew he was worried about her because she hadn't been sleeping much these past couple weeks. He was always looking out for her. It would have annoyed her if only it wasn't so sweet.

Captain Harry Lipshitz walked out of his office and saw his two best detectives sitting at their desks. Since they had just finished up a big case, he figured that they'd be rushing to get out the door, but they weren't.

"What are you two still doing here?" he asked.

"Just finishing up the paperwork, Cap," said Chris.

"Yup. I just talked to George, and he said that the D.A. is taking the case to trial."

"Rack one up for the good guys," said Chris.

"All right, so we're all wrapped up with this case. Now, you guys get out of here. You're young. Go have some fun." Chris and Rita looked at each other with shocked expressions on their faces. Cap was never in this good of a mood. He was always complaining about something, and it was usually Frannie, his wife. He loved her more than Chris or Rita thought possible, but he still complained. They just wrote it off as Cap being Cap.

Chris walked over and felt Cap's forehead.

"What are you doing, Lorenzo? Get your hand off my head!" Cap bellowed. Chris turned to Rita.

"His head feel's cool as a cucumber, Sammy, so he's not delirious." He turned back to Cap. "Are you sure you just told us to stop working and go home?"

"Yes, I did, Lorenzo."

"Then, it must be a special occasion," said Chris.

"As a matter of fact it is. It's mine and Frannie's 25th wedding anniversary!"

"Congratulations, Cap," said Rita.

"25 years? Wow!" said Chris.

"What's wrong, Lorenzo? You can't imagine spending that long with one woman?"

"Sure, I can," he said as he glanced at Rita. "If it's the right person."

"Well, I have to get home. I'm taking Frannie out to dinner tonight." He said with a smile. "Now, you guys get out of here, and go have some fun."

"Okay Cap. You don't have tell us twice," said Chris. Cap nodded and walked out the palm tree doors to head home to his wife. Chris turned toward Rita.

"So, what are you doing tonight, Sammy?"

"Me? I've got a hot date!" said Rita.

"What?" Chris asked with a shocked and hurt expression on his face.

"Yeah. With my TV and a bag of popcorn." A look of relief comes to Chris's face. For a second there, he thought she was serious. "What are you doing tonight?" she asked. Chris suddenly felt a little playful. He looked around to make sure that no one was watching them.

"You!" he whispered in her ear. As he pulled back, he saw Rita blushing. Since he didn't want to attract attention, he stepped back a little.

"I'll have to think about that one, Christopher."

"Oh, you won't be thinking tonight!"

"Really?" Rita asked with a smile.

"Really."

Chris and Rita had done as they promised Cap and left the station to go home. Chris had gone to his loft to shower and grab a change of clothes before heading over to Rita's apartment while Rita had gone to her place to clean up a little. She set candles all over the living room and the bedroom, and she changed into a black, lace negligée that barely covered her thighs. Before she started sleeping with Chris, she would have never thought to wear something like this, but she knew Chris loved seeing her in them, so she wore it for him. As she was lighting the candles in the living room, Chris slipped into her apartment unnoticed. He snuck up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist.

"Oooh!" Rita said as she felt his arms around her. "You scared me, Christopher."

"I'm sorry, Sammy," he said as he started to kiss her bringing a smile to her face.

"Hey! Wait a second," she said as she pulled away. "I put this on just for you and you didn't even take notice."

"I noticed! I'd just prefer to see you out of it," he said flashing her that Lorenzo grin and going back to kissing her neck. She moaned at the feel of his lips on her neck.

"I don't know, Sam. I'm not sure you deserve to see me out of it."

"What do you mean?" he asked as he pulled back a little surprised.

"Well, you snuck in here and almost scared me half to death. What makes you think I'm gonna reward you for that?"

"Oh, Sammy! You'll never be able to resist my charms," he said as pulled her close to him and led them over to the couch. He ran kisses all over her face and down her neck,and as they came near the couch, they fell backwards onto it. Chris pinned Rita down under him, and she giggled as he started kissing the sensitive part of her neck. She had unbuttoned his shirt and pulled it off by the time he got her negligée off. They startedto passionately kiss each other again as the piercing sound of the ringing phone infiltrated the air.

"Damn!" exclaimed Chris. He looked down at his naked best friend, and did not want to stop. "Let it ring!"

"It could be work," Rita exclaimed as Chris tried to coax her into ignoring the phone.

"I don't care."

"Come on, Sam. Let me up."

"Okay, okay. I'm moving." Chris reluctantly let Rita go but only enough so that she could reach the phone. He still had her pinned beneath him. Once she grabbed the phone,he laid his head back down on her chest. "Hello?" she answered while running her hand through Chris's hair.

"Rita, this is Cap. We've got a DB over on Greenview Ct. You and Chris need to get over here. Do you want me to call him or can you get a hold of that partner of yours?"

Rita smiled as she said, "Don't worry. I'll give Chris a call, Cap." Chris raised his head and smiled at Rita. "Bye," she said as she hung up the phone.

"We've got a customer?" Chris asked.

"Yup. Sorry, Sam."

"I guess you'll want me to get up so you can get dressed, huh?" he asked with a grin.

"I don't necessarily want you to get up, but you have to," she said smiling. Chris sighed as he got up and handed Rita his shirt which she quickly threw on to cover her nakedness. "You know, I should take a quick shower before we head out. Would you be interested in joining me, Christopher?"

"I'll race you up the stairs," he said as he took off for the shower.

"Hey no fair! You're cheating," she yelled as she chased after him. Needless to say, their "quick" shower wasn't so quick.

~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~
When Chris and Rita arrived on the scene, Cap was already there. It didn't escape his attention that his top detectives arrived late and in the same car. Chris and Rita walked over to Cap.
"What took you two so long?" asked an aggravated Cap. "Just because the guy isn't going anywhere doesn't mean you can take your sweet time in getting here. You know I had something to do tonight too, but I still got here quickly." Rita looked at Cap and began to blush. Chris noticed so he covered with the quickest thing he could think of.
"My car kinda broke down again, so Rita had to come pick me up."
"You should really do something about that car, Lorenzo."
"That's what I told him," Rita said feeling a little guilty that Chris was taking all the blame.
"Enough harpin' on my car. What do we got here, Cap?"
"Mr. Jack Anders was found dead at 6:30 PM by his wife, Grace Anders. Looks like a suicide, but I still want you to check out all the possibilities. Why don't you go ask Diana for her report."
"Sure, Cap. We'll talk to you later," said Rita. "Enjoy your dinner with Frannie."
"I will," Cap said as he left the crime scene in the hands of his detectives.
Chris and Rita walked over to Diana, who had just finished examining the body.
"Hey D, what's the story with this one?" asked Chris.
"Well, well. Look who finally decided to show up," she said with a smile. Diana was one of the only people who knew about Chris and Rita's relationship. "What'd he have you tied down to the bed, Rita?" Chris motioned for her to lower her voice.
"Actually," Rita said with a smug look. "I had him tied up," she said with raised eyebrows. This shut Diana up quick. She wasn't sure whether to take Rita serious or not. She was never sure with these two! "So, what do we got?"
"Well, he's got a gun shot to the head. It appears to be a suicide at first, but I'm not sure anymore."
"Why not?" Chris asked.
"Well, look at the angle the bullet entered his head. It's too awkward an angle for a suicide. Don't you think?"
"Yeah, it is. He'd have to had been in a really weird position for him to have shot himself," said Chris. He turned to Rita. "And I thought this would be a simple case."
"Oh well. Let's go question the wife, and the daughter 'cause I'm tired and I want to go home."
"All right, Sammy. We'll see you later, D," Chris said as he ushered Rita away from Diana and over to the house. Before they went inside, Chris pulled Rita away from the crowd for a second to talk to her privately. "Sammy, are you all right? You don't look too great, and you just said you're tired. I know you've been overly tired lately."
"I'm okay, Sam. Don't worry. I just need to catch up on my sleep that's all," she said trying to convince herself more than she was Chris.
"If you say so. Just promise to tell me if something's wrong, okay? I worry about you."
"I promise, Sam." They entered the Anders' mansion and walked over to Mrs. Anders and her daughter, Felica. "Mrs. Anders, I'm Sgt. Lance, and this is my partner Sgt. Lorenzo. We're very sorry for your loss, but we have some questions for you. Do you feel able to answer them right now?"
"Sure, I'll answer any questions you have," said the teary eyed Grace Anders.
"When was the last time you saw your husband before his death?" asked Chris.
"I saw him this morning before Felica and I went shopping. He told us that he was going to sleep in today and then head off to work."
"Where did your husband work?"
"He was a partner in J&R Shipping with Robert Waters. Oh god! How am I going to tell Robert? He gets back from vacation tomorrow, and he probably hasn't heard yet. He was Jack's best friend."
"I'll do it, mother," said Felica Anders. "Don't worry."
"I'm very sorry about your father," said Chris.
"Thank you, Sgt. Is it okay if I take my mother upstairs to lay down now?"
"Go ahead. We'll be in touch with you both if we have any more questions."
"Okay," said Felica. She took her mother upstairs.
"I think we should get home now, Sammy. There's nothing left to do here."
"You won't get an argument from me," said Rita. "I'm way too tired to protest."
"Well, I'll have to relax you when we get home," he said with a grin spread across his face.
"Sounds like heaven," she said as they walked back to the car.
~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~

They entered Rita's apartment about fifteen minutes later. Rita unlocked the door and threw her keys on the table. Chris came up behind her, like he had done before they were interrupted, and wrapped his arms around her. She sighed in his arms.

"That feels good."

"Yeah? Well, now I think I should try and relax you like I promised I would."

"What do you have in mind?" she asked seductively.

"How about this?" he said as he lowered one of his arms and picked her up at the knees. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he carried her up the stairs.

They walked into Rita's bedroom, and Chris gently laid her down on the bed. Then, he climbed in next to her and began to kiss her lips softly.

"You sure know how to relax a woman, Sam," Rita said with a smile.

"Well, I try," he teased. He covered her mouth with kisses again. They began to rid themselves of their clothing, and they spent the remainder of the night making sweet love to each other.

~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~
Rita was seated at her desk in the Palm Beach PD when her partner walked into the office with breakfast. Since they were trying to keep their relationship a secret from Cap and the rest of the department, they had agreed to come to work in separate cars most of the time. Chris went for breakfast so that there was time between his arrival and Rita's.
Chris walked over and sat on the edge of her desk as he opened the bag and handed a bran muffin and a cup of coffee to Rita.
"Here you go, Sam. A bran muffin and a cup of coffee for you," he reached into the bag and produced a bagel with tons of butter on it. "And a bagel for me."
"You call that a bagel? I call it a death wish. Look at all that cholesterol, Sam. You're just asking for a coronary!"
"It tastes good. That's all that matters," he said as he took a huge mouthful.
"Lance, Lorenzo! In my office now!" came the familiar loud voice of their captain.
"I guess breakfast will have to wait," Chris said as he put his bagel down on the desk and followed Rita into Cap's office.
"What's up, Cap?" asked Rita.
"Where are we with the Anders case? Any leads yet?"
"Well, Diana says it's not a suicide," said Chris.
"And I made some inquiries this morning," said Rita. "It turns out that his wife and daughter split his money, and the company goes to the daughter."
"The daughter? Why not the wife?" asked Cap.
"Well, I called the house and set up a meeting with Mrs. Anders this morning. Hopefully,she'll be able to tell us something."
"All right. Good job. Keep working on this, and give me an update later."
"Sure, Cap."
"Now, what are you still sitting here for? Go, go!" he shooed them out of his office.
"We're going," said Chris. He and Rita left the office and finished their breakfast on the way to the Anders' mansion.
~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~

He slowly unzipped the back of her dress and let it fall to the floor. Her fingers were running up and down his bare chest and her tongue followed. His hands remained behind her back as he unsnapped her bra and removed it from her body. She unbuckled his pants and pushed them to the floor. Once they were both free of clothing, he carried her over to the bed and carefully laid her in the middle of it. Then, he crawled in next to her and joined their bodies together as she moaned his name.

"Rob!" she screamed as she slowly lost touch with reality.

He collapsed on top of her and whispered, "You were amazing as always, Felica."

~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~
Chris and Rita were shown into the living room area by the Anders' maid. A couple minutes later, Mrs. Anders walked into the room and greeted them.
"Hello, detectives."
"How are you feeling today, Mrs. Anders?"
"I'm doing much better. Thank you. Now, I'm assuming you have some questions for me."
"Yes, we do," said Chris.
"We talked to your husband's lawyer, and he said that you and your daughter will split your husband's money, but that Felica gets your husband's half of J&R Shipping."
"Yes, that's correct."
"Why don't you gain control of his shares in the company?" asked Chris.
"Well, I'm not the business type. Jack always took care of that. Felica is majoring in business management in college, so Jack wanted her to have the company."
"I see," said Rita.
"It's not as if I need the money. Jack was a wealthy man. Half of his money is more than enough to live on."
"Okay. Thank you for your time, Mrs. Anders. We'll have to speak with your daughter, so could you please have her call us when she arrives home?"
"Sure. Shall I show you out?"
"We'll find it," said Rita. They left the mansion, discussing the case on their way back to the car.
"What do you think, Sammy? She guilty?"
"I don't know, but I'm not ready to rule out the daughter yet? She benefited the most."
"And we haven't even talked to the business partner."
"We'll talk to him tomorrow, Sam. His secretary said his business trip went longer than he had planned." Rita unexpectedly felt a little dizzy and had to steady herself on the car so she didn't fall. Chris saw this and ran over to her.
"Sammy! Are you okay?" he asked as he held onto her, keeping her upright.
"Yeah, I'm fine Chris. I just got a little dizzy."
"That looked like more than just a little dizzy to me."
"I'm fine. Really!"
"No you're not. I think you should go to the doctor, Sammy. What if something's wrong?"
"Chris, I'm fine." He looked at her skeptically. "All right. Let's make a deal. If anything like this happens again, I'll make an appointment. If not, then you'll stop worrying."
"I guess that sounds fair."
"Good."
"I just worry about you, Sammy. I don't want to take the chance that I'll lose you. You mean way too much to me. I wouldn't be able to survive without you."
"Whenever you say something like that, it just reminds me of how much I love you, You know that?"
"Of course I do. That's why I say it," he said grinning from ear to ear.
"Let's get out of here, Sam." They left for Rita's apartment.
~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~

Rita awoke to the feel of Chris's arms wrapped tightly around her. She smiled as his chest rose and fell under her head. She lifted her head resting it on her hands so she could watch Chris sleep. Rita had spent many mornings just watching Chris sleep. She'd memorized every detail of his face while he was sleeping. She could now tell what he was dreaming about by his facial expressions, and right now she could tell by his smile that he was dreaming of their previous night's lovemaking.

Suddenly, Rita felt extremely nauseous and bolted from the bed into the bathroom. She barely made it to the toilet bowl when she got sick.

Chris woke up as soon as he felt Rita abruptly leave her place in his arms. He jumped up, threw on his boxer shorts, and followed Rita into the bathroom. He held her hair back as she got sick and helped her over to the sink to wash up when she was done.

As Rita tried to walk from the sink back to the bed, she still felt a little dizzy.

"I got ya, Sammy," Chris said as he picked her up and carried her to the bed. "Are you okay?"

"Now, I am. I don't know what happened, Sam. I just felt really nauseous all of a sudden, and then I got sick."

"Maybe this will tell you that something's wrong and you should make a doctor's appointment."

"Sam..."

"What do you mean 'Sam'? Are you that quick to forget the deal we made yesterday? You promised me that you would make an appointment if you felt sick again. Well, you just got sick, and I don't see a phone in your hand."

"All right, all right. I'll call the doctor as soon as we get to the office."

"Office? You're not going to stay home and rest?"

"Come on, Sam. I'm fine now, and we have a case to solve."

"As long as you promise to make an appointment, I might consider letting you go to work."

"Excuse me, Christopher. 'Letting me go to work' I'm not a child. I can decide these things for myself."

"I'm sorry. I'm just a tad bit overprotective when my Sammy is sick."

"You got the overprotective part right, but the tad bit, I think that's an understatement."

"Ha, ha. You're so funny, Sammy," he said sarcastically.

"Let's get moving before we're late for work. We don't have much time left, and Cap will kill us if we're late again."

"Well, in that case, we should take our shower together. Saves time and water," he said grinning.

"Nice try, Sam. Don't you remember what happened last time we took a shower together?" she asked referring to their late arrival at the Anders crime scene.

"Okay, you have a point. Go take your shower while I fix us some breakfast. It'll take you longer in the shower anyway. It always does."

"Are you saying I'm slow, Christopher?"

"No, I'm saying you're a woman. And stop calling me Christopher. Everytime you do that, you make it sound like I'm in trouble."

"Sorry, Christopher," she said smiling.

"What am I gonna do with you, Sammy?" he asked shaking his head back and forth.

"You love it, and you know it." Chris just grinned as he left the bedroom without saying a word.

~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~
Chris was in Cap's office discussing the Anders case while Rita was on the phone with her doctor. Chris was continually looking at Rita's face through the office window trying to read her expression so he could tell if she made an appointment or not. Cap noticed that Chris was distracted.
"Lorenzo, what's up with you today?"
"What do you mean, Cap?" Chris asked turning his attention back to his captain.
"You're distracted this morning. Don't tell me," he said with a smile. "Was it a blonde, a brunette, or a redhead?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Last night. You have to have been with a gorgeous woman last night, and that's why you can't concentrate, right?" Chris smiled at the captain's obvious interest.
"Well, actually it was a brunette," Chris said as a picture of Rita appeared in his head.
"Come on. Tell me more," Cap said as Rita walked in the door.
"Tell you about what, Cap?" she asked.
"Chris was just about to tell me about the beautiful brunette he was with last night. So, come on, Lorenzo. Spill."
"All I'm gonna say is that she was the most beautiful woman in the world, Cap. If you knew who I was talking about, I know you'd agree," Chris said bringing a smile to Rita's lips.
"You're no fun, Lorenzo. I was looking for details. So, what can I do for you, Lance?"
"Actually, I need the rest of the afternoon off, Cap."
"Why?" Chris and Cap said simultaneously.
"Are you feeling okay?" Chris asked thinking that she was nauseous again.
"I'm fine now, but I was nauseous this morning."
"Really?" Chris asked pretending to be surprised.
"You should have called in sick," Cap said.
"That's what I told her," Chris mumbled under his breath, but it didn't go unnoticed by Cap or Rita.
"What was that, Lorenzo?" asked Cap.
"Nothing. So, why do you have to leave, Sammy?"
"I called my doctor's office, and he had a cancellation, so if I leave in the next ten minutes, then he can fit me in today."
"Okay. Go ahead, and feel better, Lance."
"Thanks, Cap."
"I'll walk you out," Chris said as they left Cap's office.
"Wait. You never finished....." It was too late. Chris was already out the door with Rita.".....your story about the brunette."
~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~

"Do you want me to come with you, Sam?" Chris asked as he walked Rita to her car.

"Nah, I'll be fine."

"Are you sure? 'Cuz I'll go to tell Cap that I've got something to do."

"I'm sure," Rita said with a smile. She leaned in and gave Chris a quick kiss after making sure that no one was watching them. "Besides, we have an appointment with Robert Waters today. You know, the business partner. And somebody has to be there."

"Yeah, I remember. Just don't be surprised when you hear me knocking at your door after work tonight."

"I won't," Rita said with a smile. She gave Chris one last kiss before heading off to her doctor's appointment.

~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~
Chris pulled up to J&R Shipping in his Charger. He got out of his car passing Felica Anders on his way into the building.
"Miss Anders?" he asked.
"Yes?" She turned around and recognized Chris. "Hello, detective."
"What are you doing here?" Chris asked.
"Robert just got back from his vacation," she lied. "I came here to tell him about Daddy."
"I see. Well, I have an appointment with him, but I would still like to speak with you later."
"Sure. I should be at home. You can give me a call there."
"I will." Felica left, and Chris went to go speak with Robert Waters.
~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~

"Good afternoon, Miss Lance. What can I do for you today?" her doctor asked as he walked into the exam room.

"Hi, Dr. Seidel. I haven't been feeling well for the past week or so, and my boyfriend finally convinced me to make an appointment, so here I am."

"Well, what seems to be the problem?"

"I've been extremely tired for over a week, and I was nauseous this morning. I've been dizzy a couple times too."

"Hmmm." the doctor said already guessing the problem.

"Do you think you know what the problem is, doctor?"

"I think I have an idea, but let's run a couple tests first, okay?"

"Sure."

~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~
"Hello, I'm Sgt. Lorenzo. Are you Robert Waters?" Chris asked as he entered the man's office.
"That's me, Sgt. What can I do for you?"
"Well, I'm sorry about your friend, but I need to ask you a couple questions."
"Sure, go ahead."
"Are you aware of any enemies that Mr. Anders may have had?"
"No, Jack was a great man, and he was a wonderful friend. I don't think he's ever crossed anybody to the point where they would get back at him in this capacity."
Chris was very suspicious of Robert already. It wasn't what he said that made Chris wary of him, but it was the way he said it.
"In Jack's will, his half of the business is left to his daughter, Felica. Why wasn't it left to you or his wife?" Chris asked seeing if Robert would give the same answer as Mrs. Anders had given.
"Well, Grace never had a head for business, so he left it to Felica. Why didn't he leave it to me? I have no idea, Sgt."
"Okay. Mrs. Anders and her daughter mentioned that you were on vacation when Jack was killed. Where did you go?"
"I needed a vacation, so I flew my private plane down to the Caribbean for a couple days."
"All right. Thank you for your time, Mr. Waters." Chris left the office, and headed to Rita's apartment. He was very anxious to find out what happened at her doctor's appointment.
~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~

Rita sat curled up on her couch wearing a pair of sweats. She was still thinking about what she had found out at her doctor's appointment. How was Chris going to react to her condition? This was the question she pondered as Chris entered her apartment. The sound of his keys hitting the table alarmed her. Chris saw her jump.

"Sorry, Sammy. I didn't realize you were day dreaming," he apologized for disturbing her.

"That's okay, Chris."

"So, how'd your appointment go? I was worried about you all day long."

"It went okay."

"Okay? Did the doctor tell you why you were getting dizzy and over tired all the time?"

"Yeah," she said as he sat down facing her on the other end of the couch.

"Well, are you gonna tell me?" he asked getting worried about her evasiveness on the subject.

"He ah..... he said that I'm pregnant, Chris." Chris's face went from worry to shock.

"Did Rita just say she was pregnant?" he thought. "Wow, Sammy," were the only words he could get out of his mouth.

"I know. I was surprised when the doctor told me too."

"I can't believe this, Sam," he said as his face turned from shocked to overjoyed. "We're gonna have a baby!" Rita smiled at him finally allowing herself to feel happy about the news she had discovered.

"I'm so glad you're happy," she said as she moved to his side of the couch and threw her arms around his neck.

"Happy? I'm ecstatic! Do you know how happy you just made me?" he asked as he pulled back to look at her face.

"I wasn't sure if you would want to have a baby," she said a little embarrassed now knowing how excited he was.

"Wasn't sure? Are you kidding? Sammy, I love you more than anything, and a baby created from that love will be the luckiest baby in the world. God, I can't believe this!" He leaned down and kissed Rita gently on the lips. "You know what, Sammy? Stay right here. I'll be right back."

"Where are you going?"

"You'll see." He ran over to the table and picked up his keys, then he went back over to Rita. "Wait right here, and don't move a muscle," he said as he kissed her and headed for the door.

"Well, if I don't move a muscle, how a I supposed to breathe?" she teased.

"True. Okay, then only move enough so that you can breathe, okay?"

"Okay," Rita said giggling. Chris left the apartment and came back a few minutes later."What was that all about?" she asked as he once again threw his keys on the table. He walked over and sat next to her on the couch.

"I had to go get something from my car."

"I just told you that I was pregnant with our baby. It couldn't wait."

"No," he said with a smile. Then, he got down on his knees in front of Rita. "Sammy, I have something important to ask you." Chris reached into his pocket and pulled out a small jewelry box. A wide smile appeared across Rita's face as she realized what Chris was about to do.

"You do?" she asked as her smile grew wider.

"Yeah. See, I was wondering ah..... will you marry me, Sammy?" Tears began to form in Rita's eyes as Chris opened the jewelry box to reveal a nice size diamond ring. She wrapped her arms around Chris's neck and kissed him like there was no tomorrow.

"I love you, Chris. Yes, I'll marry you!"

"Yes!" he screamed as he jumped up taking Rita with him. He spun them both around as Rita giggled at his excitement.

"Are you sure about this?" Rita asked when Chris set her down.

"What do you mean? Of course I'm sure."

"I just don't want you to feel like you have to marry me because I'm pregnant."

"Are you kidding? Why do you think I had this, huh?" he asked as he slipped the ring onto her finger. "I was already planning to propose to you. I was just waiting for the right moment. And when you told me about the bambino, I figured why wait?" Rita smiled at him again.

"Do you know how much I love you, Christopher Lorenzo?"

"I have a clue, Rita Lee Lance soon-to-be Lorenzo. Now, would you care to show me?" he asked sporting the Lorenzo grin that always melted Rita's heart.

"You know I would," she said as they began to kiss each other. Rita wrapped her arms around his neck, and Chris pulled her closer to him. His kisses went from her mouth to her neck. His hands slipped under the back of her sweat shirt, and Chris was surprised and excited at what he found there. Rita wasn't wearing a bra, which only served to arouse Chris more. He slowly pulled the shirt over her head and then worked off her pants as well. Rita didn't like the fact that Chris was still fully clothed, so she attempted to unbutton his shirt. When she couldn't get the buttons open, she got frustrated and ripped the shirt open, buttons flying everywhere. Chris was amazed at how anxious she was and he smiled at her. "Sorry, Sam," she said smiling. He scooped her up in his arms, and carried her up the stairs. He laid her down on the bed and pulled back to remove the rest of his clothing. Rita was not happy about the separation, but when Chris crawled into the bed next to her, she showed him how ready she was for him by taking hold ofhis mouth. She released his mouth, but only long enough so that she could guide him into her.The only sounds heard from the room for the remainder of the night were cries of pleasure.

Chris and Rita were at work the next morning checking out some leads, but Chris couldn't help staring at Rita. He kept thinking about the fact that their baby was growing inside of her. Rita had caught him staring a couple times, and she warned him to stop before someone caught him, but he just couldn't help himself.

Rita was on hold with the airport checking out Robert Waters' story about taking a flight down to the Caribbean, and she noticed Chris staring at her again. She made a face at him telling him to stop, but she knew he wouldn't. She looked down at her hand and was saddened by the fact that she couldn't wear her engagement ring to the office. She and Chris had decided earlier that morning that she should just wear it on a chain around her neck at the office for now, but the second she got out of the station, she would put her ring back where it belonged.

Chris was flipping through some papers on his desk when Rita got off the phone.

"Did his story check out?"

"His flight plans show him going in and out of the airport on the days he said he did, but the airport flight attendants said that he made a few extra trips back and forth in between."

"So, he wasn't altogether honest with us, Sam. What a surprise!"

"Wait there's more. On his first trip to the Caribbean, he wasn't alone."

"Well, who was the other passenger?"

"Miss Felica Anders, but she wasn't on his return flight back to the Caribbean."

"The plot thickens. So, what does this mean? You think Robert and Felica killed Jack?"

"Could be. Try this on for size, Sam. Robert wants Jack's half of the business, so he seduces Felica because he knows she gets his half if Jack dies..."

"And he convinces Felica that if Jack knew about them that he'd kill him, so they should kill Jack first," Chris cuts in putting the pieces together. "But why the vacation, Sammy?"

"Hold on. I've got an idea." Rita picks up the phone and dials.

"Who are you calling?"

"You'll see in a second." She waits for someone on the other end to pick up. "Yes, can I have the department of records please."

"Records?" Chris says out loud.

"Hi, this is Sgt. Lance, Palm Beach PD, Homicide Division. I need to find out if a marriage certificate was filed a couple days ago for a Robert Waters and a Felica Anders. Yes, I'll hold."

"Good thinking, Sammy. If Robert wants the business, then he'll have to marry Felica to get her father's shares."

"Yup." She goes back to her phone call. "Yes, I'm still here...Okay. Thank you." Rita hung up the phone.

"So, did your lead pan out, Sammy?"

"It sure did," she said as she stood up from her desk. "Robert Waters and Felica Anders were married the day before Jack Anders died. Now, I think we should go warn Felica that Robert could be trying to kill her for her father's shares of the company and convince her to testify against him."

"You think we can, Sammy? She's married to him, so she doesn't have to testify remember?"

"Yeah, but I think that if we offer her immunity, then she'll crack."

"All right. Let's go." They leave the office and head over to the Anders mansion.

~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~
Felica Anders was tied to the bed, wearing only her panties and her bra. Robert was standing at the dresser getting something from the drawer.
"Rob, I'm waiting," Felica said seductively.
"I'm coming." He hid the object that he had retrieved from the drawer behind his back as he walked over to the bed. He climbed on top of her and began kissing her. "I have a little surprise for you, sweetheart," he said as he pulled a gun from behind his back. Felica saw the gun and screamed in fear.
~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~

Chris and Rita pulled up in front of the mansion and got out of the car. They heard a scream from the second floor as they rang the doorbell.

"Watch out," Chris told Rita before he kicked the front door open. Chris and Rita ran up the stairs and found Felica's bedroom. They saw Robert on top of her with a gun pointed at her head.

"Freeze, police!" Chris and Rita shouted. Robert turned towards them and pointed his gun at Rita. The rest of the scene seemed to play out in slow motion for Chris. Robert looked ready to pull the trigger, but Chris beat him to it, shooting him in the chest as he threw himself in front of Rita. Robert fell off the bed and onto the ground clenching his chest, and Felica screamed.

"Are you okay, Sam?" Chris asked as he helped her up from the ground.

"Yeah. I'm fine. Go check on him," she said motioning to Robert Waters. Chris went over and checked Robert's pulse.

"He's gone." Rita walked over to the bed, and untied the ropes holding Felica down to the bed. Chris handed Felica her robe.

"Thank you." She was still shaking out of fear. Chris and Rita called Cap and took Felica's statement.

"Rita, you look a little shaken up. Why don't you take her home, Chris," said Cap.

"I think that's a good idea, Cap. We'll finish up the paperwork tomorrow."

"Okay. Goodnight."

"Goodnight, Cap."

~~~~~~~~~~*~*~*~*~*~~~~~~~~~~
Chris was lying in bed waiting for Rita to come join him. She walked out of the bathroom and went over to her dresser and pulled out one of Chris's button down shirts. She removed all her clothes, which sent a smile to Chris's lips, and put the shirt on. Then, she walked over to the bed and curled up in Chris's arms.
"I think we need to talk, Sammy."
"What about, Christopher?"
"Do you have any idea how scared I was today?" Rita turned in his arms to face him.
"Scared of what?"
"Of losing you or the baby, Rita. When Robert Waters was pointing that gun at you today,I was screaming inside thinking that something might happen to you. I felt helpless."
"But you did help, Chris. You shot him before he could shoot me."
"But what if I hadn't? What if I would have froze?" They each sat there in silence for a moment thinking of what their lives would have been like without each other.
"What are you saying, Chris?"
"I'm just saying that I don't want anything to happen to you. You and this baby," he said putting his hand on her stomach, "mean the world to me, Sammy."
"And you and the baby mean the world to me. Chris, are you trying to get me to stop beinga cop? Because I don't think I can."
"No, no. I know that you love being a cop, Sammy. And we both know that it's dangerous. Ijust want you to be extra careful, okay?"
"I can do that."
"Good," he says as he kisses her on the top of her head. "I also wanted to talk to you about something else."
"What is it?"
"Well, we have to decide what we're going to do about Cap."
"What do you mean?" she says sighing contentedly in his arms.
"We're gonna have to tell him about the baby eventually 'cuz if we don't, then correct me if I'm wrong, Sammy, but I think he's gonna notice," he says laughing.
"What? You don't think I can just slip in and out of the station up to my due date?" she teased.
"I don't think so, Sammy. I'm pretty sure Cap would notice a nine month pregnant woman walking in and out of the station."
"So what are we gonna do?"
"I don't know yet, but I don't want to be spilt up as partners. I wouldn't trust anyone but myself to watch your gorgeous butt."
"Very funny, Christopher!" she said with a smile.
"It's true."
"Well, we both know the rules."
"Nothing physical between partners," they said simultaneously.
"Cap could make an exception for us," said Chris.
"Yeah, but what if he doesn't?"
"I don't know, Sam. We could become PI's. That wouldn't be so bad."
"Are you willing to lose your job so that we can still be partners?"
"Yes! Sammy, I love you, and I want to be your partner in every aspect of our lives. I want to be your partner at work, your husband, your best friend, and the father of all your children."
"Hold on a second, Christopher. What to you mean 'all'? How many children do you plan onhaving?"
"Oh, I don't know. At least ten!"
"Ten?!?" asked a shocked Rita.
"Yeah. Don't you want tons of kids, Sammy?"
"I think we should just concentrate on the one that we're having first."
"Okay. Sounds like a plan. So, back to the whole Cap thing. You think you're ready to tell him yet?"
"I guess so. The sooner we get our engagement out into the open, the less guilty I'll feel whenever we see Cap."
"Me too."
"Was there anything else you wanted to talk about tonight?"
"Actually, I don't feel much like talking, Sammy. I have a better idea," he said as he began to nuzzle her neck.
"Well, what do you feel like doing?" she asked as a huge smile formed at her mouth.
"A little of this," he said as he kissed her neck. "And a little of this." He kissed her chin. "And a little of this." He kissed her nose. "And maybe some of this." He leaned down and captured her mouth with his.
"I think I'm gonna like this idea, Sam. I think I'm gonna like it a lot!"
Chris and Rita proceeded to make love to each other, securing the future they dreamed of.
