The Waitng Game

Rita indulged him and tried to put it all in perspective for him. "Well, look at it this way. At least we found him, even if he was dead. He can't kill anyone else now. We don't have to worry about the Perez investigation anymore, I assume the FBI will take over for us."

"That's true. The less stress, the better. Not that doing all this paper work is stress free. But I guess its better then getting shot at all the time, luckily there was none of that this week. At least this job is less dangerous." He paused for a second before continuing. "And speaking of things that were none of this week, I'm sorry about last night."

Rita stopped rubbing his shoulders and looked at him. "It wasn't your fault, interruptions just seemed to happen at all the right times. Besides, two nights of no sleep made us both tired anyway. We've got the rest of our lives to make it up to each other."

"Yeah, but the last two weeks have seemed like a life time, and those interruptions seemed a little too coincidental to me. At least with this case being closed, we focus on each other more, and ignore the phone."

Rita smiled. "Since you brought it up, I have an idea."

Chris smiled too, knowing exactly where she was going. "Oh yeah? What? Remember, we haven't gotten those blinds for the door yet, like Kyle suggested."

She hit him playfully. "No, I was thinking that we could go home for lunch."

"Home?" he asked, intrigued.

"Yes, home. I think we have some food left over from last night," she said smiling.

He was becoming more and more interested in the idea as he thought about it. "And maybe we could go to lunch a little early?"

"How early" she asked, a little skeptical about his question.

"Well, its eleven thirty now, and we usually go around twelve thirty or one right? So how about we go and eleven thirty one?" he asked hopefully.

She looked at him, not at all surprised by his suggestion. "You never cease to amaze me, you only think about one thing."

He stood up and grabbed her hand. "Yeah, you," he whispered in her ear. She laughed and that was all the encouragement he needed. "Good, let's go," he said, leading her out of the office.

They burst through the apartment door, kissing passionately. They pulled apart as Chris got the keys out of the door and closed it behind them. Rita immediately went toward the bedroom while Chris locked the door, and turned on the answering machine. Then he too went for the bedroom. There, he found Rita sitting on the bed, turning off the phone that was next to it.

Chris started toward her. "Okay, the door is locked, the phones are off and the answering machine is on. No more interruptions, right?"

"There better not be or I'm giving up," she replied, smiling, as he leaned down to kiss her. He then pushed her gently back onto the bed and she pulled him down with her, locked in their passionate kiss.

"Are you okay over there?" Rita asked playfully, glancing over at Chris who had just sighed deeply. She rolled onto her side to look him in the face.

He looked at her at smiled. "Yeah, I'm fine." He kissed the back of her hand, and then the wedding ring that was on the hand. He rolled over so that he was now on top of her. He kissed her, on the lips this time, and said, "Just very happy." She smiled and he started kissing her again, first on the lips, and then her cheek.

As she started running her hands absent-mindedly up and down his back, he worked his way to her neck, then her shoulder, and then to her chest. She started giggling as he got to her breasts. "Sam it's two thirty," she managed to say.

He looked up at her quickly and asked, "So?" before returning to what he had been doing.

She smiled at him. "So we have to go back to work." He didn't say anything but continued with his kisses, now even further down her body. She closed her eyes and let herself enjoy what he was doing to her. The feeling of his mouth on the soft skin of her stomach was too good to ignore. Even so, she forced herself to stay in control, if she didn't, Chris certainly wouldn't. "Sam..." she said, barely above a whisper.

He stopped what he was doing momentarily, knowing that she was right, but hoping that he could change her mind. "Why?" he asked, as he worked his way back up to her lips.

"Because if we don't, Cap is going to track us down," she said, her eyes still closed.

"No he won't. We're on our lunch break," Chris tried to explain, continuing to work his way back up her body.

"A three hour lunch break?" she asked as he arrived back at her lips. She looked at him doubtfully. He looked at her and groaned.

"You're no fun," he said, pouting.

m not?" she asked, deciding to play along. She ran her fingers through his hair and placed her hand behind his neck, waiting for a response.

"I know we have to back to work, I was just having fun," he said, rolling onto his back, but still looking at her, hoping that she would give in.

She propped herself up on her elbow and looked at him. "You all ready had fun four times, Chris," she said, smiling. She ran her fingers up and down his chest.

"And you didn't have fun?" he asked, all ready knowing the answer.

She giggled before saying, "Of course I had fun. I had lots of fun, but I think that you should conserve some of your energy for tonight."

"Tonight?" he asked.

"Yeah, tonight," Rita said, sounding surprised but knowing that she hadn't told Chris yet. "Didn't I tell you that Keisha is going to take Kristen tonight? She felt bad that we weren't getting any sleep so she volunteered. We get the house all to ourselves tonight, no interruptions," she explained with a smile.

Chris looked at her, it was almost too good to be true. "Really?" he asked, "We haven't had a night alone since she was born."

"I know. I thought you'd like that," Rita said, still smiling. He leaned in to kiss her, and after a minute she stopped him. "So if we don't go back to work now, we'll have to stay late tonight, your choice."

He pulled away, sat up, and found his pants. "Let's go Sam, it's two thirty you know," he said, getting dressed as quickly as he could.

Rita laughed at him before getting up herself. "I'm hungry, I going to find something to eat before we go," she said, walking up behind him and kissing his neck.

"I'll go find something, you get dressed," he said, turning around.

"Okay. I think there's still some Chinese from last night. I know I never got to eat it," she said, searching for her clothes.

Chris started toward the kitchen before turning back to Rita. "When we get back to work, remind me to call Fat Wao's."

Rita looked at him confused. "Why do you need to call Fat Wao's?" she asked.

"Didn't you say that the delivery guy was rude to you last night?" Chris said, as if anyone should know the reason he wanted to call Fat Wao's

"You remember that but you don't remember the first phone call?" she asked in disbelief.

"Of course. It was the highlight of the evening," he said, "And hopefully, fast food won't be the highlight of this evening."

"I can assure you that fast food will not be the highlight of this evening. We've got a week's worth of being apart to make up for."

"So, you really did miss me while I was gone," Chris said, as if he were just know coming to that conclusion.

"Of course I missed you while you were gone," Rita said. She had finished getting dressed and now walked over to Chris. "I always miss you when we're apart." She looked up at him and gave him a kiss, the first of many more that were to come that day.

As I'm sure you all know by now, I don't own Chris or Rita or Cap, they all belong to USA and Stu Segal and Stephen Cannell (much to my dismay). I do own Kristen and Kyle and Elizabeth, they are my creations.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank linda and lisa for posting this story. I would also like to thank Liz, again, for all her help and support and great ideas. And Erin and Danielle and Alison who always indulge me.
